Clotrimazole belongs to imidazole category of azole antifungal class of drugs. It has broad-spectrum activity. It is used for the treatment of sickle cell anemia, malaria and cancer. It is fungistatic in nature and inhibits yeast by causing alteration in its cell membrane.

Mechanism of Action
Clotrimazole inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol which is the component of fungal cell membrane by inhibiting 14-alpha demethylase. This enzyme prevents the conversion of lanosterol to ergosterol. thus, decreases the growth of fungal cells.
